New Charleston Mayor Will Be Decided Today

Charleston Mayor and Runoff Elections

For the first time in 40 years the city of Charleston will be electing a new mayor after longtime mayor Joseph Riley decided not to run after 10 straight terms in office. The original elections held 2 weeks ago on November 3rd revealed the top two candidates in John Tecklenburg and Leon Stavrinakis. Now, the runoff election will be held today, November 17th to ultimately determine who will be mayor of the city of Charleston.

In addition there are 2 Charleston city council seats that will also be determined today. In district 1, there is a runoff between Gary White and Shawn Pinkston and in district 3 challenger Jimmy Bailey faces off against incumbent James Lewis.

Meanwhile Mount Pleasant has 2 city council seats open that will be filled by the end of the day. Will Haynie and Jim Owens take on incumbent Chris O’Neal there.

Who Votes? Where Do I Vote and When?

If you live in the city limits of Charleston or Mount Pleasant you can vote at a registered location even if you did not vote in the original November 3rd elections. Polls open at 7 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. There are voting locations spread out across the area. Transportation will be offered from 9:00am until 4:00pm on Tuesday, November 17th.
