Charleston SC Beach Communities

By February 18, 2013 February 19th, 2018 Featured Neighborhoods

At Matt Andersion Properties, we love the beach. In fact, Matt Anderson himself is an avid surfer. Here are some beach communities that we love around Charleston South Carolina.

Wild Dunes

On the northernmost tip of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, sits what Travel and Leisure readers voted the third best resort for families in the United States: the Wild Dunes Resort. A popular vacation destination since its inception in 1971, this gated, private resort is also a thriving year-round community. Visitors and residents alike flock to the secluded beach that runs the entire length of Wild Dunes; go for a leisurely bike ride along the wide, white sand beach or settle in for a day full of sunshine and relaxation by the water. If you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous, the resort offers boat rentals, banana boat rides, jet-ski tours and kayak rentals. Property owners also have the added option of using the Property Owners Beach House at 6600 Palmetto Drive, which offers air-conditioned rental spaces, a kitchen, and a wide back porch with rockers overlooking the ocean. Those who call Wild Dunes home—either for a week for vacation or for a lifetime—always have sand in their shoes and the beach in their backyard.

Isle of Palms

Front Beach Isle of Palms South Carolina

Front Beach Isle of Palms, South Carolina

Isle of Palms is home to the Wild Dunes resort, but this barrier island has so much more to offer. If you’d prefer the flexibility of living outside a gated community while also enjoying the same beautiful beach as Wild Dunes, consider renting or purchasing a home on Isle of Palms. The island is seven miles long, but only one mile wide, so you’re never far from the beach no matter where you are. While the area around Front Beach is a draw for visitors during the summer months, the island’s five thousand full-time residents can still easily find a quiet spot elsewhere along the expansive beaches. If you’d rather be in the middle of things, there’s always something exciting happening on Front Beach: grab an ice cream at Ben and Jerry’s, see a concert at the Windjammer, or meet friends for lunch at Coconut Joe’s or Banana Cabana.

Sullivans Island

Breach Inlet Sullivans Island South Carolina

Breach Inlet Sullivans Island South Carolina

In his short story, “The Gold Bug,” Edgar Allan Poe wrote of Sullivan’s Island, “This Island is a very singular one. It consists of little else than the sea sand, and is about three miles long. Its breadth at no point exceeds a quarter of a mile.” While much has changed on this island since Poe wrote that story in 1843, Sullivan’s Island has stayed true to the small, intimate feeling that Poe describes. Poe might be the island’s most famous resident (however brief—he only lived there while he was stationed at Fort Moultrie as a young man), but there’s much more to Sullivan’s that its brief moment in literary history. Sullivan’s Island is different than other area beaches in that it has zero hotels, motels or bed and breakfasts; the only way to stay on the island overnight is to rent one of the sixty or so beach homes available. The two thousand year-round residents of Sullivan’s pride themselves on the natural beauty of their beaches and have made preserving that beauty for future generations a priority. The beaches there are much quieter than those found elsewhere in the area, and it’s a perfect getaway for families or anyone looking for a peaceful beach retreat.

Folly Beach

Folly Beach South Carolina

Folly Beach South Carolina

Folly Beach, known as “The Edge of America,” offers something for everyone who ventures out past James Island. Local surfers flock to the Washout on Folly for the best waves in the Charleston area, and the beach hosts several surfing tournaments each year. Locals and visitors also can monitor the local wildlife on the beach, including the loggerhead turtles that nest on Folly from May to September annually. In recent years, the approximately forty nests produced over three thousand turtle hatchlings, the survival of which was due largely to the care of volunteers. If fishing is more your style, pick a spot on the Edgar S. Taylor fishing pier and see if anything’s biting. The fishing pier also hosts Moonlight Mixer several times a year through the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, where you can boogie down with the locals to classic beach music. Folly Beach combines laid-back island living with eclectic shops, exciting nightlife, and memorable scenery.
